The hilltop castle was constructed in 1608 by Hiroie Kikkawa, the first lord of Iwakuni Domain. However, it was demolished seven years later due to the Law of One Castle per Province established by the Tokugawa Shogunate. The current keep is a reproduction built with a drawing used when building the original castle. Weaponry, armor and katana swords, etc. are displayed inside the keep. At the top of the keep a magnificent view of the city spreads out in front of you.

The local dish “Iwakuni Sushi” has been eaten in Iwakuni for many generations. It is “oshizushi” (pressed sushi) and also “chirashizushi” (scattered sushi - a bed of vinegared sushi rice and ingredients “scattered” over the top in a decorative manner). Iwakuni Sushi is topped with local ingredients, such as Iwakuni Renkon lotus root and fresh fish from Seto Inland Sea cut into small pieces. Delicious and popular local dish.
